The human brain has evolved a memory adept at remembering places. We would know where the lions are, where cliffs are, where other dangerous tribes are and where the good berries are. There is a technique called the memory palace that suggests a person create a mental map in their mind so that they may tie visual memories with new topics to keep in mind. I now suggest a person use this practice to create a handy bag for their things to recall.
Pokemon is a fun example. Most people in their twenties know at least the first 151 Pokemon. So use a handful of them as memory ties and the ones used, call that your party. This creates a handful of known visual memories that can be used as mental anchors for new topics. Think of more ties that topic has to that particular Pokemon such that there is a deeper network for a stronger memory. The whole idea here is that memory becomes stronger the more thoughts about it exist. There are myriad other ways to exercise this but Pokemon is a good pop tie in.
So for those non Pokemon masters, the script is simple. Take physical objects you can visualize in your mind that are very familiar to you and related as a group. As things come up in your day to day that you want to recall, tie them to one of these objects. It is very helpful if the objects themselves can be seen relating to the new memory without clouding up the new memory itself. Kitchen appliances, your closest dozen friends, movies, books, bands whatever as long as there’s a good number and they have differing characteristics and are close to you.
The fullest point of this exercise is literally the thought put into a topic. Doing it this way is more mentally palatable and topically flows, fits in better. As one more often does this it be forms second nature and the brain also grows in this way.
